Product Description
A safe deposit box refers to a secure storage facility—similar in security to a bank vault—that is rented out by banks, hotels, and other institutions for customers’ use. Such facilities are equipped with comprehensive security measures and maintain a constant temperature and humidity level. Modern safe deposit boxes require customers to verify their fingerprints upon account opening, while the most advanced offerings are fully automated, self-service units providing 24-hour service. The safe deposit box service involves accepting clients’ mandates to safeguard their valuables by renting them a secure box. During daily life or international travel, customers can store at a bank’s safe deposit box valuable or confidential items such as gold, silver, jewelry, antiques, calligraphy and paintings, stocks and bonds, property deeds, insurance policies, and other sensitive materials, thereby alleviating concerns about theft, unauthorized disclosure of information, fire, and other security risks. Safe Deposit Box Classification: Editor Domestically produced safe deposit boxes include fixed-type boxes, portable boxes, electrically controlled boxes, and fully automated boxes. Among these, fixed and portable boxes are the most widely used.
The early history of safe deposit boxes can be traced back to the Middle Ages. In medieval paintings, one occasionally sees wooden cabinets used to store gold, silver, and precious jewels—these served as the precursors to modern safes. Figure 1 depicts a replica of an 18th-century Louis XV–era wooden safe for storing gold, silver, and jewelry, faithfully reproduced by the renowned French safe manufacturer FICHE-BAUCHE. Such safes resembled ordinary furniture and lacked specialized locking mechanisms, offering only limited security. It was not until the early 19th century, some 200 years ago, that, with the growth of the economy and society, the safe industry began to develop and specialized lock manufacturers emerged in Europe. In 1818, the British company CHUBB was founded; nearly two centuries later, CHUBB has become a leading authority in the safe industry.
Phase Two: In 1825, the French company FICHE-BAUCHE was founded… Subsequently, these manufacturers all began producing safes. The materials used for safes had shifted from wood to various robust metals; however, construction still largely relied on traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery or solid casting, resulting in a design and craftsmanship that closely resembled contemporary furniture, with locks of only modest precision.
Phase Three: Figure 3 depicts an iron safe approximately 200 years old, resembling a standard double-door metal cabinet. Its door hinges are crafted with mortise-and-tenon joints typical of wooden furniture, showcasing highly sophisticated manufacturing techniques. Although the development of safes in the United States lagged slightly behind that in Europe, the U.S. nonetheless emerged as a global powerhouse in safe production. In 1857, the renowned firm S&G (Sargent & Greenleaf) was founded in the United States and subsequently became one of the world’s most celebrated manufacturers of locks and safes.
Phase Four: Figure 4 shows an early S & G product, dating back approximately 130 years. At that time, welding technology had not yet been developed, so the safe was assembled using countersunk rivets, giving it a rugged, imposing appearance and a strong sense of security.
Phase 5: Figure 5 shows a product from the same period as Figure 4, which is noticeably smaller and equipped with casters and a handle for easy relocation and placement, clearly setting it apart from conventional furniture. It is standardized in design and fitted with casters and a handle to facilitate movement and positioning.
Stage Six: In the late 1850s, the lock industry was still underdeveloped. Although the external designs of safes were constantly evolving, there was little progress in the precision and reliability of their locking mechanisms. It was not until the late 1860s that American inventors developed lock mechanisms and multi-bolt locking systems for safes, significantly enhancing their security performance. Figure 6 shows an early safe featuring a lock mechanism and a multi-bolt design, which emerged after 1865. At the turn of the 20th century, European engineers, drawing on Swiss watchmaking techniques, introduced dial-type combination locks, marking a breakthrough in safe technology and leading to substantial improvements in confidentiality and security. The development of locks and safes has always been mutually reinforcing.
To this day, dial combination locks remain widely used in the safe industry. Early dial combination locks—and the safes that employed them—date back to around 1900. In the 1960s and 1970s, rapid advances in semiconductor technology led to the development of electronic combination locks, which were subsequently adopted across a broad range of safe models. Subsequently, LED and LCD digital displays were integrated into safes, while growing demand for fire resistance spurred the creation of various fire-resistant products. Meanwhile, the advancement of fingerprint-scanning recognition technology further facilitated the adoption of fingerprint locks in safes, and the popularity of magnetic cards gave rise to magnetic-card–operated safes. Over time, safe designs have evolved from their original, basic functions to encompass an almost limitless array of specialized types: anti-theft, fire-resistant, combined anti-theft/fire-resistant, anti-magnetic, residential, commercial, hotel-use, firearm-storage, and document/data protection, among others. The variety of fire-resistant, anti-theft/fire-resistant, anti-magnetic, residential, commercial, hotel-use, firearm-storage, and document/data protection safes is virtually endless.
